How does this happen?

On May 20th, one of my flight instructors at work crashed his bicycle. He had major brain trauma and has recently come out of a medically induced coma to start his rehab. It will be a long process, but his family is happy with his progress so far. They just released him from ICU and have increased visit length from 1-2 minutes to 2-5 minutes.
